Eradication of Open Defecation

With the Government of Tamil Nadu’s campaign for Eradication of Open Defecation, ExNoRa International through Tiruvanamalai District ExNoRa has executed a novel initiative at Tiruvanamalai Town. A detailed assessment of all existing toilet complexes at Tiruvanamalai town was done and as a follow up, 5 public toilet complexes in prominent locations were identified, cleaned with the help of Tiruvanamalai Municipality and decorated with balloons and traditional materials. The toilet users were given thankfully given chocolates for using the toilets.

Thematic model drives home ills of open defecation

It was about busting age-old prejudices of the mind when it comes to defecation and sanitation. World Water Day was celebrated in a novel format by Exnora International with the collaboration of the Velankanni Town Panchayat and TMSS Self Help Groups, on Thursday evening.

The event that rang in the critical link between sanitation and water was marked by a life-size model representing the ills of open defecation and the significance of toilet usage.

Collector T.Munusamy paralleled healthy sanitation to a wise investment that jointly augured well for dignity, health and all round development of the individual. Lauding the organisers for putting up a thematic platform projecting the harmful effects of open defecation and advantages of toilet usage, Mr.Munusamy said that the model could speak to scores of people driving home the message that works may not. Unveiling the model for public view at the Velankanni bus stand, the Collector said that decorating all public toilets in the town, and distributing sweets to the users was a novel idea to make people change their concept of the toilet. The toilet was essential for a healthy life than mobile phones and the public need to be educated on this.

No approval for plans without rain water harvesting structures

Rally flagged off by the Nilgiris Collector to commemorate World Water Day.High priority would be given to harvesting rain water in this hill station, said the Chairman, Udhagamandalam Municipal Council, K. Sathyabhama, here on Thursday. She was addressing a function organised by the Rural Development Organisation (RDO) an Aruvankadu-based non-governmental agency to commemorate World Water Day.

Stating that building plans which do not provide for rain water harvesting structures will not be considered by the municipality, she urged the people to take a pledge to save water. In the plains people are getting water with great difficulty. Pointing out that a sum of Rs. 1.38 crore has been earmarked to the municipality to put up public conveniences, Ms. Sathyabhama said that 15 places have been identified.

The Chairman, RDO, N.K. Perumal, said that with the inflow of tourists steadily increasing the need to provide public conveniences at appropriate places have become urgent. Under the Hill Area Development Programme (HADP) at least 20 per cent of the allocation should be set aside for development of Ooty. He added that the RDO will supplement the efforts of the municipality in beautifying the hill station. Natural resources of the Nilgiris should be protected.

Earlier, a rally was flagged off by the Nilgiris Collector, Archana Patnaik. Among the participants were members of self help groups. An exhibition was declared open by the Superintendent of Police S. Nizamuddin.

Cleanliness drive in Mettupalayam Municipality soon

Mettupalayam Municipality with 33 wards spread over 7.2 sq. km is all set to become a “clean town” with the assistance of Exnora under the National Urban Sanitation Plan.

Mettupalayam Municipal Chairman D. Sathishkumar told The Hindu that Exnora every year was choosing cities/towns across the country. For the current year, the plan was for selecting eight towns in Tamil Nadu and of which three were from the jurisdiction of the Regional Director of Municipal Administration – Tirupur Zone. The three chosen now are the Udhagamandalam, Mettupalayam and Bhavani municipalities.

Embarking on such an initiative will help Mettupalayam get an additional edge in getting more funds from the centre for excellent implementation of Exonra-aided cleanliness drive. The same would also enhance the prospects of the municipality get better attention, especially in the wake of the sanitation policy of the State Government which is on the cards, Mr. Sathishkumar said.

Public lavatories to flush out open defecation

'Kulithalai carved a name in solid waste management with assistance from Exnora International, Water Aid' Open defecation is a slur on civilised society and every effort must be made to eradicate the menace for providing a healthy living environment to residents, was the message sent out by speakers at a meeting called to commemorate World Water Day here on Thursday.

Kulithalai Municipality, Exnora International, and Water Aid joined hands to organise the function to mark the day. The focus this year was on water and public sanitation with thrust on eradicating open defecation that caused several communicable diseases.

Calling upon the residents to avoid open defecation, Mr. Pallaviraja pointed out that the municipality would strive to construct public lavatories in as many wards as possible.

Stating that Kulithalai should become a model sanitation town providing a perfect, safe and healthy living atmosphere to its residents Mr. Pallaviraja noted that protected water supply, public sanitation and hygiene were the cornerstones of developed society. The civic body would strive to ensure that for its citizens, he assured.
